Nowadays, more and more people are looking for natural and affordable alternatives for household cleaning, moving away from harsh chemical products that can affect both our health and the environment. Homemade soap made with vinegar and baking soda is the perfect solution for those who want an effective, safe, and completely natural multi-purpose cleaner.
This recipe combines three basic ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry and that, when combined, create a surprisingly powerful and versatile cleaning product. Baking soda acts as a mild abrasive and natural deodorizer, white vinegar provides disinfecting power and removes limescale, while neutral soap delivers the grease-cutting ability needed to eliminate stubborn dirt.
What’s fascinating about this formula is the chemical reaction that occurs when acidic vinegar meets alkaline baking soda, creating an effervescence that helps dislodge embedded dirt while forming sodium acetate, an effective and completely safe cleaning compound.
This homemade cleaner is not only environmentally friendly—by avoiding unnecessary plastic packaging and harmful chemicals—but also incredibly economical, costing a fraction of what you would pay for equivalent commercial products. Perfect for cleaning kitchens, bathrooms, floors, and multiple surfaces, this multi-purpose soap will become your essential ally for maintaining a spotless home naturally and sustainably.
Ingredients
- 1 liter of hot water (80–90°C, not boiling): Essential for dissolving the grated soap and activating the cleaning properties of the other ingredients. Water that is too hot can degrade some components, while lukewarm water won’t dissolve the soap efficiently.
- 1 cup of white vinegar (240 ml, 5% acidity): A powerful natural disinfectant and limescale remover. It cuts grease, eliminates odors, and leaves surfaces shiny without chemical residue.
- ½ cup of baking soda (120 g): A mild yet effective cleaning agent that works as a non-abrasive scrub, deodorizer, and booster. When combined with vinegar, it creates a bubbling reaction that helps loosen dirt.
- 100 g grated neutral soap: Provides the base cleaning and degreasing action. Its neutral nature makes it safe for multiple surfaces.
- 10 drops essential oil (optional): Adds fragrance and extra antibacterial properties. Lemon is refreshing and degreasing, lavender is calming, and tea tree has strong antimicrobial effects.
- 1–2 tablespoons liquid glycerin (optional): Helps protect your hands from drying out and improves the texture of the cleaner.
- ½–1 tablespoon salt (optional): Acts as a natural thickener if you prefer a gel-like consistency.
Preparation
Step 1:
Choose a large heat-resistant container (glass or stainless steel). Heat the water to 80–90°C (very hot but not boiling).
Step 2:
Pour in the hot water and add the grated soap. Stir for 3–5 minutes until completely dissolved and smooth.
Step 3:
Gradually add the baking soda in three portions, mixing well each time to avoid lumps. Add glycerin here if using.
Step 4:
Let the mixture cool to about 40–50°C. Slowly add the vinegar in a thin stream while stirring. Expect bubbling—this is normal.
Step 5:
Continue stirring until the bubbling subsides (2–4 minutes). Add essential oils if desired.
Step 6:
(Optional) Dissolve salt in a little warm water and add gradually to thicken the mixture.
Step 7:
Add cold water to reach a total of 1.5–1.6 liters. Mix well.
Step 8:
Let the mixture rest for 6–8 hours. Then transfer to bottles and label them.
