Yeast Fertilizer Recipe for Geraniums
To prepare it, you will need:
- A 3-liter jar
- ½ tablespoon of dry yeast
- 4 teaspoons of sugar
- One finely chopped banana peel
- The peel of one medium-sized onion
Place all the ingredients into the jar and pour in boiled water that has been cooled to a suitable temperature. Mix thoroughly and leave the mixture in a warm place for 3 days.
Thanks to the yeast, nutrients from the onion peel and banana peel are transferred into the water, creating a nutrient-rich solution containing vitamins and trace elements.
Water each plant with 200–400 ml of this fertilizer, depending on its size. Any remaining fertilizer can be used on other potted plants and even seedlings, as it is already diluted to an appropriate concentration for plant nutrition.
A quick note: while yeast-based homemade fertilizers are popular among gardeners, there is limited scientific evidence that they significantly increase flowering in geraniums. For reliable blooming, geraniums generally benefit most from:
- Plenty of bright light (4–6+ hours daily)
- Moderate watering (allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings)
- A balanced fertilizer or one slightly higher in phosphorus and potassium
- Regular removal of spent flowers and leggy growth
