Preparation
1. Prepare the dough
In a bowl, mix the flour with sugar, baking powder, and vanilla sugar. Add the cold butter cut into cubes and rub together until it forms a crumbly mixture. Add the egg and knead into a smooth dough.
Grease and flour a 24 × 24 cm baking dish. Evenly press the dough into the bottom, prick several times with a fork, and place the dish in the fridge to chill.
2. Prepare the filling and bake
Peel and slice or dice the apples. In a pan, caramelize the sugar and honey. Add the butter, then stir in the apples and caramelize them over medium heat. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the dough and sprinkle with chopped walnuts.
Bake in a preheated oven at 180 °C (356 °F) for about 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool.
3. Make the meringue
Whisk the egg whites with a pinch of salt until stiff peaks form. Gradually add the sugar and beat until you have a glossy, stiff meringue.
Spread the meringue over the cooled apples, or pipe it decoratively using a piping bag
