Vanilla Custard Bars

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the custard: In a medium saucepan, combine whole milk, heavy cream, sugar, and vanilla extract. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until it starts to steam (but not boil). In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs and flour together until smooth. Gradually pour the hot milk mixture into the egg mixture while whisking continuously to temper the eggs.
  2. Cook the custard: Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens to a custard-like consistency. Remove from heat and set aside to cool.
  3. Assemble the bars: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll out the puff pastry and fit it into the bottom of a baking dish. Pour the custard mixture over the pastry and spread it evenly. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the custard is set and golden brown on top.
  4. Cool and serve: Allow the bars to cool completely. Once cooled, dust with powdered sugar before cutting into squares.
