How to Make Smothered Cheesy Sour Cream Chicken Step by Step
Prepare the Chicken
Start by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a baking dish to prevent sticking. Season the chicken evenly with paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper, making sure every piece is well coated.
Sear the Chicken (Optional)
If you have a few extra minutes, this step adds wonderful depth. Heat olive oil or butter in a skillet over medium heat. Sear the chicken for about 2–3 minutes per side, just until lightly golden. This step is optional, but I highly recommend it if you want extra flavor.
Make the Cheesy Sour Cream Sauce
In a mixing bowl, combine the sour cream, shredded cheese, minced garlic, and dried parsley or Italian seasoning. Stir until smooth and creamy. At this point, I’m usually tempted to sneak a taste—it’s that good!
Assemble the Dish
Place the chicken in the prepared baking dish. Spread the sour cream mixture evenly over the top, fully smothering each piece of chicken. Make sure every corner is covered for maximum creaminess.
Bake Until Bubbly
Cover the dish loosely with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Then remove the foil and return it to the oven for another 10–15 minutes, until the sauce is bubbly and the chicken is cooked through.
Rest and Serve
Let the chicken rest for about 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired and get ready to enjoy one seriously comforting meal.
