Sausage and Rice Skillet

 

1. Sautéing the Sausage

In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add sliced smoked sausage and cook until browned on all sides. Remove the sausage from the skillet and set it aside.

2. Sautéing the Aromatics

In the same skillet, add diced onion and bell peppers. Sauté until the vegetables are softened. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds.

3. Adding the Rice and Seasonings

Stir in the white rice, paprika, and Italian seasoning. Cook for a minute or two until the rice is lightly toasted.

4. Simmering and Cooking

Pour in the chicken broth and diced tomatoes (with their juices). Season with salt and pepper. Stir to combine all the ingredients.

5. Bringing It All Together

Return the cooked sausage to the skillet, nestling it into the rice mixture. Cover the skillet and let it simmer on low heat for about 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and has absorbed the liquid.

6. Garnishing and Serving

Once the rice is cooked, remove the skillet from the heat. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley for a burst of color and flavor.

Tips for a Flavorful Dish

  • Experiment with different types of sausage, such as spicy orouille or sweet Italian sausage, to suit your taste preferences.
  • If you prefer a spicier dish, add a pinch of red pepper flakes along with the seasonings.
