Pennsylvania Dutch Apple Dumplings

Preparation

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Butter a 9×13-inch baking pan. Set aside.
  2. Peel and core apples. Set aside.
  3. On a lightly floured surface, roll pastry into a large rectangle, roughly 16×24. Cut into 6 equal squares.
  4. Place an apple on each square with the cored hole opening facing up. Place a piece of butter on each apple opening.
  5. Place a tablespoon of brown sugar on each apple, tucking some into the cored opening and a bit around the bottom of the apple. Sprinkle some cinnamon over the apples.
  6. Fold corners of the pastry over the tops of the apple, then press seams together to seal in the apple. Place apples in prepared baking dish. Set aside.
  7. In a saucepan, combine the 2 cups brown sugar, water, butter, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Place over medium heat and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer, and let cook until sugar has dissolved, about 5 minutes.
  8. Pour sauce over dumplings. Bake until apples feel soft when poked, about 50 minutes.
  9. Serve with vanilla ice cream and enjoy!
