Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.

Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, alternating with milk, until just combined.

Fold in diced apples and nuts, if using.

Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top.
